Science Playground 1993 Airway Heights, WA.

Interactive installation for exploring visual and acoustic phenomena sited on a mound in Sunrise Park, Airway Heights, Washington (near Spokane). The installation was commissioned by the Art in Public Places Program of the Washington State Arts Commission in partnership with the Department of Corrections and the City of Airway Heights.
Components include: Big Eyes/Big Ears: a rotating tower with binoculars for viewing distant mountains and parabolic "ears" overhead connected by pipes to the listener's ears. Speaking Tube Dishes: Two vertical parabolic dishes connected through underground pipes for investigating acoustic properties and focal properties of soundwaves. Echo Well: An underground telephone for communicating over a distance of 150 feet.


Socrates Sound Observatory 1990 Long Island City NY

A participatory sound installation for a waterfront site at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, NY. Community concerts take place at the site. Components include: Earth Mound with parabolic Reflecting Dish, five steel conga drums and three Drumseats surrounding an Earth Drum played with the feet.

 

Underhill Park Playground 1999 Kissena Queens NYC

Bronze Drum Tables & Seats are sited on 'soundwave' terrazo patterns creating a musical environment for pereforming and creating acoustic phenomena. Playground Design:Katherine Bridges landscape architect NYCDPR. Fabricated by Patrick Fitz-Gerald and Playground Environments. Installed by A-Z Contracting.

Orchestra 1988 Candlestick State Recreation Area SF CAL

A participatory sound installation built at Candlestick State Recreation Area (next to Candlestick Park) in San Francisco. Completed 1988. Components include: Sun Gongs, Conga Drums, and three Drumseats surrounding an Earth drum played with the feet. Site dimensions; 25' X 25'.


Adirondack Sound Park 1984 Lake Placid Center for the Arts, NY

Site specific sound park design for the grounds of the arts center. Sculptural instruments include: two large-scale environmental xylophones made of tuned pine and granite bars, two gong trees fabricated of steel, and a series of steel gongs mounted individually. Site dimensions: approximately 25' X 30'.

Tuned Sun Gong array played by striking with fingertips. Fabricated of stainless steel.


Plaza at COSI 1997 Toledo Ohio

Ramped walkway between two 8' diameter vertical stainless steel dishes creates an acoustic space for reflecting and focusing sound. Children discover they can generate sound waves and stop them with a wave of the hand.
