Airway Heights, WA, 1993

Interactive installation for exploring visual and acoustic phenomena sited on a mound in Sunrise Park, Airway Heights, Washington (near Spokane). The installation was commissioned by the Art in Public Places Program of the Washington State Arts Commission in partnership with the Department of Corrections and the City of Airway Heights. Components include: Big Eyes/Big Ears: a rotating tower with binoculars for viewing distant mountains and parabolic "ears" overhead connected by pipes to the listener's ears. Speaking Tube Dishes: Two vertical parabolic dishes connected through underground pipes for investigating acoustic properties and focal properties of soundwaves. Echo Well: An underground telephone for communicating over a distance of 150 feet.
