Musical
Water Clock Twelve vessels strike the hours of the day; for example; at noon each of the vessels are filled by individual water lines and spill their contents into the basin. On the backstroke, the 'handle' on each vessel strikes a tone bar producing a musical sequence of notes. At one o'clock, one tone is heard, at two o'clock, two tones, etc. The pentatonic scale of the notes is tuned to produce harmonious music in any sequence. Water spilling from the vessels creates rippling patterns in the pool below and overflows into the labyrinth channels. This contemporary water clock design is comprised of five inter-related components for perceiving time cycles: Labyrinth, Geyser, Water Wheel, Musical Clock and Tide Vessels. Water Clock is a new paradigm for the concept of timekeeping in the 21st Century. It draws upon the historical past while acknowledging its future in a kinetic, ever changing celebration of myth, geology and natural phenomena. The continuous action of the Water Clock is punctuated by the orchestration of events marking the passage of time and creating a sense of anticipation by onlookers waiting to hear the musical tolling of the hour. As they fill and tip, the kinetic motion of the Clockworks vessels visually enhances the drama of the 'event'. |
